October 9, 2011

Today we had a pretty successful end to our week. Last week was terrible for us numbers wise, but this week we did way better. The Familia Nunez came to Church, all five of them. I didn’t get to talk to them, but I hope they had a good experience and will keep coming. Maria Valencia also came and we found out she has a friend in the Spanish Ward, so now we can get a solid fellowshipper for her. So far things in the area are doing much better and we’ll continue to work hard to see even more success.

Dear Parents

Things are going well in Weslaco. This past week we saw more success than in the last two weeks combined. We found a family of five that came to church on Sunday so we are very excited for them. I have been sick for the last couple of days with a cold. It never helps when you are always riding a bike. It isn't even cold down here at all. It is still in the 90's most days but I still found a way to get a cold. I've been taking a lot of Nyquil and cough drops so it has helped.

So I will be speaking on the 11th? Sounds good to me. What is the High Council report? Do I just tell them how my mission went? Well we have interviews tomorrow and it is my last one before the exit interview so I think it will be kept very short as usual. I sent a package home this week and it just has sweaters and stuff that I won't need so I can make room in my luggage. I will probably send another package next month full of ties and more clothing I won't need. So you don't have to open them. Anyway thanks for the letter and we will talk to you next week.

Today was Sunday and we had a pretty sorry performance for Gameday. Our only ray of sunshine was Ariel, who came to the Weslaco Ward. The Lyle girl took really good care of her and she seemed like she had a good time. She hasn’t smoked weed since Tuesday and is doing very well. The Nunez family couldn’t make it because Carla is now working on Sunday. Maria was MIA all week, so hopefully all is well with her. We set two new BD’s tonight with the Cruz daughters (P.M. family). We just need to reactivate Sis Cruz and it should be good. Hopefully next week will be a bit better for us and we can get some more people to Church.

Dear Family

It was good to hear from you. It is sad to hear that the NBA is still in a lockout. I've decided I will stay on the mission until the lockout is over! Haha. Just kidding. Things are going well here. We are working really hard to find some investigators and get them to church. We should be having a baptism on Sunday. We just helped her stop smoking weed some she can be baptized. She is doing great and we are really excited for her. This week is the week where we set BD's for the last week that I am here so it should be a big one. Right now we are just trying to get the trust of the members again. Some missionaries in this area before me weren't the best examples to the ward so we are trying to fix it. The problem is that we have like 70% of the members in the wards in our area and it is hard to go by all of them. The members seem to be doing better and they are starting to give us referrals. We found a part member family yesterday and set dates to be baptized for them so hopefully the ward helps out with that. We tell everyone hi for me and have a great week! Love you mucho

Yesterday we had a lot of good opportunities set up but most of them didn’t come to pass. We keep busy and had a lesson with Apulinar. He is doing OK but we will have to see if he comes to Church this Sunday. We also talked with Janette and the Family Nunez. It was awkward because it was just the kids. I don’t think Elder Walker and I were on the same page either. We had them pray about a date and they didn’t receive answers. We just need to work with them a little more and talk to Carla to get her on board. We did meet a couple named Juan and Cindy. They are really busy, but they are a cool family. Things are going OK here, but I feel like things are on the rise.

October 24, 2011

This week started off rough, but we ended pretty well. We started doing 3 hour goals on Saturday just like in Brownsville Days, and it kind of worked. We were way more connected to our goals and had a busy day. I think it all paid off, because we had a great turn out for Gameday. Ariel came and interviewed. She has to talk to President Trayner for a question 4 problem, but other than that, she is good to go. She also brought her step-sister, Kassandra, to Church. Next, Ashley and Maria came with Sis. Cruz. Sis Cruz was sharing her testimony in Gospel Principles, and it was awesome! I think they really enjoyed Church. In Spanish Ward, the Longorias came, and Danny brought his girlfriend, Grace. Juan Villarreal came after teaching him on Saturday. So we had a very successful week at Church. We just need to keep working with them, and keep them coming.

Happy Halloween! Man, this last week was pretty decent, but it didn’t feel like it. We started teaching the Herrerra Family. It is a part-member family. The Dad and one of the daughters are not members so we set BD’s with them. They didn’t come to Church today, so there was a little discouragement, but we will do a better job getting them to Church. Ashley and Maria couldn’t come because they went to Mexico to do good deeds. Ariel was very late. She had her phone on silent, but we went to her house after Sacrament Meeting, and her and Kassandra made it to the last hour, and stayed for the baptism. Ariel said she was going to cry at her baptism next week. Sweet! So today we are having a Celestial P-Day, and the best part is that Bro. Longoria is taking us to the Outlets and he is going to buy me some new shoes! I’m super stoked for it! He has been coming to Church again, so they are doing really well. There is a Halloween Party today in the English Ward and we might go to the Grindstaff’s after. It is going to be a great day!

Dear Parents

Willard's funeral sounded impressive! What do I have to do to get one like that? Haha. Things are going very well for us in the area. It is looking like we should baptize in every weekend before I leave, if everything goes to plan. We are working with a ton of awesome people and they are progressing very well. At church I had some surprises. I walked into the English ward and found out that I needed to share a few words in sacrament meeting. Before Spanish ward I found out that the district leader and I were to teach in the combined Priesthood/Relief Society Meeting. I was so nervous because I couldn't think of what to talk about but it turned out really well. We talked about Preach My Gospel and how to better use it in the home. I was really glad when it was over

As of right now I know nothing about the times of when I am going home. You should call the mission office. They haven't told me anything yet. Well that is all for me, have a great week and I love you!

Yesterday was the best Halloween on the Mission. Bro. Longoria took us to the Outlets. He got himself and Elder Walker a pair of shoes, and got me two pair! It was buy 3 get the 4th pair free. Then he fed us and got us candy apples. He is a very charitable man, and helps a lot of people out. It was one of the nicest things anyone has done for me on my mission. Next, we watched a movie called 17 Miracles, about the Willey & Martin handcart company. It was a cool movie. We then went to the Halloween Trunk-or-treat… it sucked! Ashley, Maria and Kassandra and Ariel went, but it was a bust. Then we went home and relaxed a bit. All in all a good day. Today Elder Harris got here. He is from Alabama. He should fit in pretty well. I’m excited for these last 3 weeks

So far the threesome has been a little difficult. I sleep on the couch cushions on the floor, so nights have been a little rough. Teaching in a threesome is really hard to do, because I feel I talk way too much. It is getting a bit better each day. We have ourselves very busy with the work and have been working harder than ever. Finding is still something we are struggling with. Things will start picking up, though. Ariel is more than ready for her baptism on Sunday. She had a big temptation to smoke the other day, but she overcame it and is excited. Ashley and Maria aren’t progressing as smoothly as we had hoped. Ashley seems scared to go through with it, and Mama Bear is never present at the lessons. Maria Valencia is doing great and is ready for the 20th of November. The Lord has been good to me in this last transfer and a half. Now I need to do my part to give back and make sure these people we have, get baptized.

November 5, 2011

Today was a busy day. First we went to Mercedes to unload the truck. We did it in an hour, which was a record for me and this was the 7th time that I’ve done it. After that we helped Bro. V move some couches and he took us to El Pato after. We then found our only new investigator this week. After that we had a lesson with Ariel and Kassandra. It was good and after this week we are going to focus on Kassandra and invite her to be baptized too. We had a lesson with Maria and she is now prepared for her interview for baptism. Ashley hasn’t been there for the last three lessons, so she isn’t ready for it yet. We visited the Nunez family again. We taught about how to receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. I think for the first time Julian realized he needed to be baptized again but we can’t do anything if we don’t talk to his Mom. We should have a good day tomorrow at Church and have a lot of people there.

November 6, 2011

Today was Gameday and Ariel’s baptism. Her and her family came early to Church and stayed for the whole 3 hours and the baptism. Maria also came and got interviewed. But her Mom and Ashley didn’t come. Ariel was really excited, even though we forgot to tell her to bring a towel and a change of underwear. James Lyle did the baptism and it was pretty awkward because he had forgotten how to do a baptism, but it went well. Ariel cried after and bore her testimony about how she knew this Church was true. It was cool. The Lyle’s have done so much to help with Ariel and I know that they will support her. Then during the Spanish Ward, Danny Longoria brought his girlfriend, grace, and we taught her. We didn’t want to rush her, but towards the end of the lesson, I got a prompting to invite her to be baptized. She had a big smile on her face, and said yes. Later we went to Danny’s house and he said that when I invited her, she said I had read her mind. It was awesome! I feel so good to hear that. I also bore my testimony in the Spanish Ward for the last time. I love being on a mission!

Dear Parents

This week was a great week for us! We had a baptism that went very well. It was a good service and the girl had invited her parents to come too so we can start working with them now. We also should be having another baptism next Sunday and at least one the Sunday after that. I got a new companion named Elder Harris on Tuesday so we are in a threesome until I go home. He is from Alabama and has been out for only three months. It is really different working in a threesome because I talk way too much but I am getting used to it. My district leader told me to stop talking so much and let them do most of the teaching.

We are having a mission conference tomorrow and Elder Zivic of the Seventy will visit us. And I’m pretty excited for it.

The weather has gotten a lot more chilly which is fantastic. The sun is still hot but there is a cool wind and it doesn't feel too bad. I still sweat a whole bunch but it is much better than the summer. It is going to be weird coming home to snow; I think that I am going to freeze to death!

That is great that you are keeping busy getting things ready. I'm excited for all the changes. Thanks mom for the sports update! I was pretty impressed. I appreciate your letters weekly and I love you. Have a great week!

July 7, 2010

The 4th was good. We couldn't be on the streets past 6pm so all the missionaries in our zone went to the church and watched the other side of heaven. It was fun. This past week was kind of shot as far as the work goes. On Wednesday morning we were evacuated to Edinburgh which is right next to McAllen. We stayed with some other elders who lived there. We also welcomed our new mission president, Pres. Trayner. We had two, seven hour conferences there on Weds and Thurs. Then at night we would go out and help the elders we were staying with. It rained a lot and the streets we flooded in Edinburgh and the same thing happened in Brownsville. It just rained for one day though and we returned back to Brownsville on Thurs night. There wasn't any damage except in one of the small towns in our area had a tornado and trees were knocked down. Nothing too bad. We then had two more conferences in Harlingen and Brownsville so we didn't get a whole lot of work done. Right now it is horrible because there are mosquitos everywhere. I have too many bites to count! Other than that things are going good. We are working with some great people and we are going to have two baptisms this Sunday. We keep hearing about another hurricane forming so that should be very exciting.

Things are back to normal. The baptisms went really well. We baptized a guy named Frank and his mom Maria. Maria is 81 and a former Jehovah's Witness so it was really cool to see her get baptized.

The first picture is Frank and Maria's baptism

The second is a plaque I got for passing scriptures off with pres Miller

Third is homemade pizza Elder Guillen and I made on Father's Day. The member actually made mine and put a bunch of weeds on it (spinach) and not a lot of meat but it was still really good

April 11, 2010

This week was good. We had Zone Conference and I went on exchanges with the zone leaders. I am getting fatter by the day because we get fed almost everyday. I love it!
So many people in this area just love to feed the elders. I am in a little spanish branch and an english ward. There are like 5 wards in Brownsville. We have a car because our area is huge. It covers a small town called Olmito, San Pedro, and Rancho Viejo. We are excited because we are going to have a baptism this week with this super cool lady. I have more pictures to send home but I want to just send my memory card to Holly and let her put some of them on the blog. I forgot all about my blog. I found out when one of my investigators said she had found it. Anyways all is well here. My comp is great. He was in a mexican pop group before he came out and loves to sing. We will be sitting on someones doorstep and he will be singing away in spanish. It is pretty funny. I'll have to get a video of it and send it home.
Well have a good week.
